Smart Company Project: SynerSec
SynerSec, part of the Alimento group, manages the supplementary pension plans, benefits and administration for job security funds for six sectors: fisheries, private education, hospitality, food, green services, and real estate. In total, SynerSec represents 91.000 employees.
What was needed?
Besides building and maintaining two .NET applications for SynerSec (a backoffice and an internal/external portal), Sirus was also asked to set up a data platform. The goal: enable both SynerSec employees and external union representatives to draw insights from clear, graphical reports covering topics such as long-term illness, childcare and pension payments.
What did Sirus do?
Sirus is responsible for the development and technical realisation of the data platform, in close collaboration with The Master Labs, who lead the business and functional analysis as well as project follow-up. Our team also played an important role in Business Architecture.
So far, the following has been set up: Microsoft Fabric workspaces for dev and prd environments, a medallion structure (bronze-silver-gold) as data design pattern for clear and efficient data processing, incremental loading and processing of new data on a daily basis, and a star schema in the gold layer with dimension and fact tables for efficient querying from Power BI. Direct Lake mode is used to avoid unnecessary data duplication, and Power BI reports have already been built for long-term illness, actuarial data and childcare.
Technicalities of the project
- The platform runs on Microsoft Fabric and Azure, with on-premises data gateways securely copying the necessary data from SynerSec's on-premises databases to the Fabric environment;
- Database views with restricted access protect the source tables, while separate Fabric capacities (partly reserved, partly pay-as-you-go) keep dev and prd environments cost-efficient;
- Azure Logic Apps automatically pause and resume these capacities at the right times, and scheduled pipelines in Fabric ensure reports stay up to date every day;
- Service principals allow reports to be embedded securely, while dScribe adds extra context and definitions to the data;
- The project works with Azure DevOps for version control and Jira for scrum-based collaboration.
What's next?
Sirus continues to expand the data platform together with The Master Labs, with the eventual goal of embedding the Power BI reports directly into the SynerSec portal so that employees and external union partners can find all relevant insights in a single, familiar place.
